As far as the new coronavirus variant, Omicron, is concerned, a recent report suggests that it can cause a harsh, barking cough called croup in children under the age of 5.

According to doctors, children who contract Omicron can develop upper respiratory tract infections, which can lead to croup.

That said, croup is a condition that refers to an infection of the upper airways, which not only blocks breathing but also triggers a distinctive barking sound. Typically, this may be accompanied by fever, hoarseness, and labored or noisy breathing.
