Courses for medical technicians launched by universities to create skilled workforce – Times of India

Many colleges are offering short-time and graduation courses in specialized medical technology and healthcare sectors. This has been done to fuel the growing demand in path labs, hospital management and other technical departments.

The Delhi Skill and Entrepreneurship University (DSEU), established in 2020 by the Government of NCT of Delhi, has added five new paramedical courses this year. The courses will be run in collaboration with the industry to give practical training to the students.

Courses include BSc in Medical Laboratory Technology, Emergency Medical Technology and Dialysis Technology. It also includes a BBA in Optometry and Hospital Management, which are four-year courses that include a one-year internship.

The courses will equip the students with emerging health technology as well as provide them with equipment handling training. It aims to create a highly skilled workforce in the years to come.

VES College of Arts, Science and Commerce (VESASC), Mumbai has introduced a short-term Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology that will make students employable in pathology or medical laboratories.

The BSc in Emerging Medical Technologies and Dialysis Technology courses, offered at the Center for Healthcare, Allied Medical and Paramedical Sciences, were curated after serious discussions with industry experts and then started in partnership with Apollo Medskills Ltd.

“Students are trained in medical laboratories to perform tests for the detection, diagnosis and treatment of diseases by gaining expertise in using specialized equipment. The equipment management experience has brought them Generating or reading the data needed to evaluate the effectiveness of a treatment will help.”

In India, 80% of blindness and vision problems can be prevented by providing primary eye care. “There is a demand for skilled optometrists in India and the course will help the workers fill the gap,” says Vohra, highlighting the importance of BBA (Optometry). It offers the courses in association with Lenskart and students will undertake a compulsory one year internship at Lenskart stores located across the country.

Hospital management is an important subject which needs to be handled by an efficient team. However, in most hospitals, the responsibility of management rests with senior doctors. Vohra adds that BBA (Hospital Management) will help support hospitals with efficient managers. The course module covers every aspect related to technology for supply chain management in hospitals as well as management knowledge. Vohra says, “It will prepare students to take charge of various departments including general administration, health finance management, quality control and others.”

Shantini Nair, Vice Principal, VESASC Mumbai, says that the newly added PG Diploma courses are aimed at providing students with the technical expertise to manage and optimize several innovative instruments including automatic analyzers and coagulometers. “These students will be part of the healthcare workforce of the future, and to bridge the talent gap, they will need to be trained in professional ethics as well as in soft skills to be employed in related jobs in pathology laboratories or in hospitals or clinics ,” she says. DNB/MD Pathologists or Clinical Diagnostics: 15 months course with three months compulsory internship with pathology laboratories of corporate companies will help the students.
