Court orders status quo to be maintained on setting up of colleges on temple land in Tamil Nadu

The Madras High Court has directed the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department to maintain status quo with respect to the establishment of a college on the land belonging to the Athanur Amman temple in Tiruchengode taluk of Namakkal district.

Justice R Suresh Kumar recently granted the injunction while passing an interim order on a writ petition by Tamilarasi Devasigamani and posted the matter for further hearing on January 4.

The petition has opposed the construction of the college on the temple land.

The Judge said that a Division Bench of this Court, in a recent order, while considering such proposals by the State Government/HR and CE Department for setting up of Arts and Science Colleges at needy places, made it clear That the temple land will not be exploited even for the establishment of colleges through HR and CE department.

It was held that the colleges already established by the Department were subject to the decision to be taken by the Bench. Till such time, the present proposal made by the HR and CE Department for setting up a college in Amman Temple land, whether justified or not, shall be considered only after receiving the feedback of the Department as well as needed. Temple.

“In that view of the case and prima facie case, this Court is of the view that, while granting time to the Respondents to file their written response/counter-affidavit, shall order the status quo with respect to the position as on date. Further orders Till 14.59 acres of temple land in Chitlandur village,” the judge said.
