People over 60 suffering from obesity, diabetes and heart diseases are at higher risk of developing kidney-related diseases due to COVID-19.

COVID is affecting our lives in more ways than one. This virus is also causing serious damage to the kidneys of people who have no history of kidney disease. Studies show that apart from the lungs and kidneys, other parts of the body such as the heart and brain are also being badly affected by Kovid-19. Dr Sameer Tawakale, a senior consultant in nephrology at Apollo Hospitals has now come forward to explain how COVID-19 can cause ‘serious kidney problems’.

In a Facebook Live session, Dr Tawakale explained that while COVID-19 is known to primarily affect the lungs, it also damages the brain, heart and kidneys as all these organs work together. ‘Covid is causing serious kidney problems even in people who were not previously affected by any kind of kidney disease. Many people affected by COVID are showing signs of kidney failure, some severe enough to require dialysis. About 30% of all people diagnosed with COVID infection have kidney problems. Those who had kidney disease, if they had a covid infection, they had very serious diseases, which sometimes resulted in death,’ he said during the session.

Dr. Tawakale further talked about the risk factors associated with kidney diseases during Covid-19. He explained that people above 60 years of age, diabetic and high blood pressure patients, obesity and people suffering from heart diseases are at higher risk of developing kidney-related diseases. Explaining the ways in which COVID-19 damages our kidneys, Dr. Tawakale said the virus can either directly damage kidney cells, increase blood clotting that results in reduced blood flow to the kidneys, or decrease the level of oxygen in the blood, which can block the ducts and blood vessels. Can have a harmful effect on the structure of the kidneys.

During his live session on Facebook, Dr Tawakale also listed some preventive measures such as hygiene, social distancing and wearing of masks. He also advised kidney patients to undergo dialysis if needed and get fully vaccinated.
