COVID-19 derails NEET preparation, self-study helps small town boy Hartul secure Rank 5

Hailing from Kodinar in Gir Somnath, Gujarat, Hrutul Chhag had to move from place to place in search of better education, however, had to relocate to his hometown when COVID-19 hit India. The 18-year-old said the move derailed his preparation Medical Entrance Exam – NEET 2021. While Chhag dreamed of preparing in a highly competitive environment with like-minded peers, instead he had to stay at home and attend online classes. Despite initial hiccups, self-control, hard work and strict routine, he not only cracked the exam but also secured the All India Rank (AIR) 5.

Chhag followed strict discipline while preparing at home. He used to study for 10-12 hours a day and also practice sample question papers to assess his preparation on a regular basis. “Due to COVID-19, coaching classes shifted to online mode, which affected my studies as talks and doubt clearing sessions were reduced, however, I later resorted to self-study and was able to cope with studies. Succeeded,” Hrutul told News18.com.

He used the online mode to study, however, avoided surfing the internet and was not active on any social media at the time of his preparation. He claims that he has used social media only to clear some doubts and ask for notes from coaching classes and friends.

CG secured 715 marks out of 720 in NEET 2021, the results of which were declared on Monday. The first person to get admission in medical from his family, Chhag now wants to join AIIMS Delhi for his undergraduate course. The son of a businessman and a housewife, Hrutul says that he always wanted to be a doctor and was attracted by the medical profession.

The natives of Kodinar, Gir Somnath, Chhag shifted at a young age for better education. He claimed that he already knew that he would be pursuing medical admission and hence started preparing from class 10th. He first moved to Ambujanagar to study class 10 board and complete with NCERT. He completed his class 10th from Ambuja Vidya Niketan, Ambujanagar. He then completed his 12th from Krishna International School, Rajkot and stayed there with his mother to complete his schooling. He secured 99.4 percent marks in the CBSE Class 12 board exams.

Even during board preparation, his main focus was on NEET preparation. They claim that NCERT books have been used as the foundation for medical entrance exams. He enrolled in Allen coaching classes to prepare for the entrance exam, however, eventually studying online.

“I was preparing for NEET 2021 after completing my 10th standard and always wanted to become a doctor. I have always been interested in the medical profession and before joining class 11th I knew I wanted to appear for NEET.”

For his fellow NEET aspirants, he suggests that NCERT is the most important source of study. “Study NCERT and focus on it. Many students are not able to read it properly. Practice adequate amount of questions from NCERT. If one has not been able to clear NEET 2021, one should not give up and stay motivated. Practice and persistence are the keys. Study hard and you will crack it,” suggests Hrutul.
