Covid can lead to diabetes: 7 symptoms to watch out for

Apart from your respiratory organs, coronavirus can also affect other body organs such as heart, tissues and even your nervous system. Also, the virus can be fatal for people who have co-morbidities like high blood pressure, heart conditions, diabetes etc. In a more worrying sign, recent studies have also suggested that the infection can lead to high blood sugar. Here’s everything you need to know about the symptoms, how severe the disease can be, and other factors to look out for:

Why is covid leading to diabetes?

A University of Massachusetts study suggests that many patients who have been infected with the coronavirus are experiencing a rise in their sugar levels as a post COVID complication. However, this is more of a temporary phase than a permanent thing.

In a statement, investigator Dr Sarah Kroemer was quoted by The Express as saying, “Instead of directly causing diabetes, COVID-19 may prompt patients with pre-existing but uncontrolled diabetes to see a physician for the first time, where they have a blood sugar disorder. can be diagnosed medically.”

Why is this a temporary phase?

The same report states that it has been observed that in many cases, blood glucose levels rise after initial recovery from infection but come down after medication.

Published in the Journal of Diabetes and Complications, the researchers noted: “These patients may only need insulin or other drugs for a short period of time”.

What are the symptoms of diabetes related to COVID?

Symptoms of COVID-induced diabetes include feeling thirsty, feeling tired, loss of appetite, weight loss, frequent urination, itching around the genitalia and blurred vision.

If you have been suffering from COVID recently and experiencing these symptoms, you should consult a doctor immediately.

What type of diabetes is this?

Researchers are still confused about which type of diabetes it is (type 1 or type 2), however, type 1 diabetes is mostly genetic, so some scientists speculate that this type of diabetes is called the coronavirus. Likely not possible. But, nothing can be suggested at this point of the study.
