For cricket-crazy fans of the Twin Cities, perhaps, as across the country, Diwali came a day earlier, thanks to fireworks by ‘King’ Kohli at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia on Saturday.

And, Brilliant, match winning innings from Kohli What was even sweeter for him as it helped India defeat Pakistan in the first match of the T20 World Cup and also triggered a wave of celebrations and expectations.

In many busy parts of the city, including Ameerpet, fans rallied and celebrated what critics rated as the best comeback-win win for India in recent memory and more against traditional rivals.

The bursting of crackers on the streets for once made it look like India had just won the World Cup! But, the fans get this joy whenever India beat Pakistan and that too in the showpiece of T20 format.

It was an utter delight not only for the 90,000 fans who turned up at the MCG to watch today’s match, but for all the fans who stayed away from ‘Down Under’.

For some, G Venkatesh, who along with his friends B Siva Prasad, Thanna, Narendra, N Prabhakar Reddy is leaving for Australia next Sunday to watch the two semi-finals and final in Melbourne on November 14.

“Honestly, we couldn’t have expected a better start than today’s stunning win. We are all going to Australia with the hope of seeing India win the cup,” said Venkatesh, who played in the HCA League for Crown Cricket Club.

Clearly, the mood of the fans waving tricolor flags on the streets shows that the festival of lights was the day before!
