The National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) reviewed the situation in Joshimath city of Uttarakhand and suggested that the evacuation of all residents should be a priority. Huge cracks are visible on houses and roads in Joshimath, forcing the government to evacuate the residents of the Himalayan town to safer places.
In a meeting of the NCMC, Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba said that priority should also be given to the demolition of vulnerable structures in a safe manner. The NCMC said that all studies and investigations should be completed in a time-bound manner.
Meanwhile, the Chief Secretary of Uttarakhand also informed the NCMC about the current situation in Joshimath. It said people living in severely damaged houses were being shifted to safer places.
An official statement said relief shelters have been identified at Joshimath and Pipalkoti so that all affected families can be accommodated there. The Government of Uttarakhand is providing suitable compensation and relief measures to the affected residents of Joshimath.
The Chief Secretary apprised the Committee that the operation of Joshimath-Auli Ropeway has been stopped and the construction work in and around Joshimath Municipality area has been stopped till further orders.
National and State Disaster Forces have also been deployed by the district administration for relief and rehabilitation efforts.
The Cabinet Secretary assured the Chief Secretary that all central agencies would be available for necessary assistance.
Meanwhile, two hotels in Joshimath, which caved in amid protests by their owners and locals over the issue of compensation, are being demolished. Hotel Malari Inn and Mount View were dangerously inclined towards each other, posing a threat to the human settlements around them.
