Cristiano Ronaldo closes Manchester United chapter after breaking FIFA World Cup scoring record

Cristiano Ronaldo said on Thursday he has put his recent troubles at Manchester United behind him after scoring for a record fifth time. World Portugal beat Ghana 3–2 in the cup.

Aging icon Ronaldo scored a 65th-minute penalty to move past Pele, Uwe Seeler and Miroslav Klose, who netted in four World Cups just days after parting ways with Manchester United.

Despite being named man of the match in Portugal’s opening Group H win, he graced the media with a two-minute press conference in which he answered a question.

“It was a beautiful moment, my fifth World Cup, we won, and we started on a good foot. It’s a very important win, we know the first match is important, but so is the world record. Which makes me very proud,” Ronaldo said.

Premier League giants United announced this week that Ronaldo was leaving after criticizing the club and manager Erik ten Haag in a TV interview.

But he showed no signs of straining from the bitter end of his time at Old Trafford in a win that also saw Joao Felix and rising star Rafael Leao score.

“It was an important step, it was a week that ended this chapter. It is closed, and we want to start on a good foot,” Ronaldo said.

“I could help my team and everything else doesn’t matter.”

Portugal coach Fernando Santos praised the 37-year-old, who is playing his last World Cup as a legend of the game.

Santos said, “I believe people will continue to talk about his achievements, he is a phenomenon, a legend like no other in football.”

“In 50 years’ time we will continue to talk about him.”
