Mangaluru: Central Areca & Cocoa Marketing & Processing Cooperative Limited (Campco) has condemned the alleged demand Godda MP Nishikant Dubey to restrict the use of Betel for human consumption, claiming that it causes deadly diseases such as cancer. The MP reportedly said that betel nut can be allowed to be used for other purposes like religious ceremonies.

Betel Farmers of this region, including scientists from IISc, Bangalore, have reported that betel nut cures cancer in 1974. Campco said the Supreme Court has also ruled that betel nut is food under section 2(v) of the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act.

Entrepreneur and researcher Nirjan Nampe, who has developed several betel nut byproducts, said the government should support the development of alternative uses of betel nut. He said that betel nut has many medicinal properties which can be best utilized. “We are all set to launch betel nut formulated shampoo. The launch is being done after a lot of research and testing is done. Also, we are soon going to develop a face wash from betel nut.” Nirvana has already launched betel nut tea and room freshener.
