CWG 2022: India’s Pooja Sihag wins bronze in 2022 Commonwealth Games

India’s Pooja Sihag on Saturday won a bronze medal in the women’s 76kg wrestling event at the 2022 Commonwealth Games here. Former Asian bronze medalist Haryana’s 25-year-old defeated Naomi De Bruyne of Australia in the bronze medal match. To make the podium in Birmingham 2022.

Pooja defeated Michelle Montague of New Zealand 5-3 in the quarterfinals to win her first match at the Coventry Stadium and Arena, but 2017 world champion Justina Di Stasio of Canada proved to be a very tough hurdle for the Indian in the semi-finals. Despite losing the match 0-6, Pooja Sihag fought for the bronze medal against Naomi De Bruyne of Australia.


In the medal bout, Pooja Sihag managed an opening two-point takedown and took control of the Aussies on the mat. The Indian wrestler was in a position to pin down his opponent but Bruin did well to avoid an immediate defeat. Pooja, however, picked up six points from the move and extended her lead to eight just before the break.

Pooja remained on the defensive after the restart and looked for errors on the Bruin’s side. It came to an end and the Indian ended the match with a two-point takedown to win the match by technical superiority.
