CWG 2022: Priyanka Goswami wins silver medal by breaking national record in race walk

India’s Priyanka Goswami on Saturday broke a three-year-old national record to win a silver medal in the women’s 10,000m race at the 2022 Commonwealth Games at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham.

Tokyo Olympian Priyanka clocked 43:38.82, a new Indian national record, to claim her podium spot. Khushbir Kaur with 44:33.5, had conducted the NR since 2017. The Indian improved his previous personal best of 48:30.35 by almost five minutes to clinch the medal.

Priyanka’s medal is India’s third medal in athletics at the Commonwealth Games 2022, after Tejaswin Shankar (bronze in high jump) and M Sreeshankar (silver in long jump).

With this, Priyanka also became the first Indian woman to win a medal in the race walk at the Commonwealth Games. Prior to this, Harminder Singh was the first Indian to win the Race Walk – Bronze medal in the 20 km event at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

Meanwhile, Gold Coast 2018 20km race walk champion Jemima Montag of Australia won the gold medal with a Games record time of 42:34.00. Emily Wamusi Ng of Kenya won the bronze medal with 43:50.00, a new African record.

The 26-year-old Priyanka, who holds the national records in the women’s 20km and 35km races, set the pace early and led the eight-women group for 4km before being overtaken by Jemima Montag. NGI.
