CWG 2022: ‘Sister was cheering for me from the front row’ – Jeremy Lalrinnunga highlights Mirabai Chanu’s role in winning gold

Birmingham: Jeremy Lalrinnunga on Sunday won his maiden Commonwealth Games (CWG) gold medal for India and the weightlifting squad at the young age of 19. he took the stage India 67kg was added to the men’s weightlifting category and to the medal tally of the country which currently stands at five.

When Jeremy lifted 300kg in the snatch and clean and jerk events, the entire nation was delighted. He himself was excited by the response he got from everyone around him.

The CWG gold medalist was greeted by Indian weightlifting queen Mirabai Chanu ahead of her competition and it inspired her to go for the gold. He said, “Didi (Mirabai Chanu) inspires me a lot. Before going to the competition, she met me and motivated me to do well. She was cheering for me from the very first line. I got a lot of things from her. Learned, be it about hard work and her journey to the Olympics. She guides us every time.”

Jeremy Youth, who participated in his first Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, was excited to book his first senior-level win after the Olympic Games and overcoming a series of injuries. He said, ‘I have not achieved such a big achievement after the Youth Olympics. This is my first medal in senior level competition and I have suffered some injuries. People kept asking me when are you going to bring medals after the Youth Olympics. And I kept working hard to win medals for my country. I couldn’t perform as expected but I got what I wanted.

Jeremy was determined to carry the load for India even as he struggled with a cramp in his lower back. But coping with injuries comes with a package for an athlete and Jeremy had this to say, “I will recover very quickly from my latest injury, have a minor muscle problem and will be ready for the next tournament soon.”

After his victory, Jeremy dedicated it to his biggest supporters – his grandparents. He said, “My grandfather and grandmother always prayed for me. My grandfather left me before I left for the Youth Olympics and my grandmother left me after that and I couldn’t go home both times. I know That before every lift I follow everything he told me to say and that’s why I dedicated my medal to him.

Nirav Tomar, MD, iOS Sports, who manages Jeremy, was proud of what Jeremy had achieved, saying, “Jeremy is a natural talent and he is always eager to learn and improve. He is just 19 years old And he has won a gold medal for India in the Commonwealth Games. I want to congratulate him for boosting the morale of every Indian with the final lift and I am sure this is not the only gold he will bring home for India.
