Cyclone Mocha: Bangladesh’s St. Martin’s island may go under water temporarily

Dhaka: As cyclone Mocha intensifies and winds intensify, St Martin, Bangladesh’s only atoll, may temporarily go under water, according to the head of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), Dhaka Tribune told.

“Since there is no major infrastructure on the island, the storm will not be interrupted anywhere and will hit the island directly. As the center of the storm passes over St. Martin, the water will move from one side of the island to the other, and cause the intensity of the storm to increase.” Looking at the current situation, the island may be under water for some time,” BMD director Mohammad Azizur Rahman said on Sunday. “But the water will not remain stagnant, it may even move away. The situation entirely depends on the speed of the storm,” he added.

According to Dhaka Tribune, meteorologist Shahinul Islam said that the bulk and center of the storm will pass over Myanmar and the rest will hit the Cox’s Bazar coast. Islam also said that rain has already started along the coast of Bangladesh and most parts of the country are likely to witness wet weather throughout the day.

In its morning bulletin, the BMS said the very severe cyclonic storm Mocha over east-central Bay and adjoining areas moved north-northeastwards, intensified over northeast Bay and adjoining areas and made landfall near Chittagong port.
