Mumbai moved closer to their objective of ending their six-year drought of the Ranji Trophy title by dominating the proceedings of the third day of their semi-final vs Uttar Pradesh at the Just Cricket Academy on Thursday.

With a massive lead of 346 in the second innings and a lead of nine wickets, apart from giving their batsmen significant play-time, Mumbai think-tank will be keeping a close eye on proceedings in the second semi-final at Alur.

under control

UP started the day by scoring 25 for two in pursuit of 393 for Mumbai. Barring the first hour, when opener Madhav Kaushik and captain Karan Sharma looked solid, Mumbai were in control for the entire day. Kaushik drives Mohit Awasthi and Karan hits Tushar Deshpande for a six.

But once Karan struck Awasthi and Sarfaraz Khan took a sharp catch at second slip, the Mumbai camp became increasingly assertive.

Then, off-spinner Tanush Kotian along with Suved Parkar at forward short leg took an impressive catch in the second attempt on the bat-pad chance given by Kaushik. It started to collapse with four wickets falling for 11 runs in 17 balls.

While Kotian dismissed Rinku Singh lbw, Awasthi followed it up with a double-strike over, Sarfaraz taking another sharp opportunity to dismiss Dhruv Jurel.

Shivam Mavi then used a long handle but Deshpande’s raw pace cleared Yash Dayal as UP were reduced to 180. Just over an hour into the second session.

With a lead of 213 runs, Mumbai opted to bat again to end the competition. Prithvi Shaw and Yashasvi Jaiswal started off in opposite fashion. Shaw, dropped for 13 in the street by Rinku, was at his best, while Jaiswal dropped the anchor and joined a blockathon.

When Shaw sweeps Saurabh Kumar’s left-arm spin into the deep, he scored 64 off 71 balls, while Jaiswal played 52 dot deliveries. When he opened his account with a whip to Ankit Rajput in the next over, he jokingly raised his bat towards the Mumbai dressing room, which applauded his application.

The left-handed batsman then flourished with Armaan Jaffer as the duo’s unbroken 67-run stand helped Mumbai end the day at 133 for one.
