Dalit sisters found hanging from tree in UP’s Lakhimpur Kheri

Two girls were found hanging from a tree today in Lakhimpur, Uttar Pradesh.

Lucknow:

Two sisters were found hanging from a tree this afternoon in Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh. Both the girls were minors and belonged to a Dalit family. His mother told reporters that he was kidnapped by people on a motorcycle. The bodies are being sent for postmortem and heavy police force has been deployed in the area.

“The site is being inspected by senior officers of the district. Nighasan police immediately reached the spot on information and action is being taken to send the bodies for post-mortem as per rules. Legal action will be taken based on the investigation of the matter,” The local police said in a Hindi statement.

Lucknow Range Inspector General of Police Laxmi Singh said, “The girls were found hanging from their own dupatta. There were no injury marks on the body.” He said the postmortem would be done by a panel of experts. “Based on what the family tells us in their complaint, we will file an FIR,” he said.

It is near the UP area where farmers were allegedly crushed to death by an SUV driven by Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Kumar Mishra’s son Ashish Mishra during a protest against the Centre’s agricultural laws in October last year.

Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party has criticized the Uttar Pradesh government and attacked Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath over women’s safety in the state.

Samajwadi Party tweeted, “Goons in Yogi Sarkar are harassing mothers and sisters every day, very shameful. Government should get the matter investigated, the guilty should be punished severely.”

Congress’s Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also attacked the BJP government of the state.

“The murder of two sisters in Lakhimpur (UP) is heart-wrenching. Family members say those girls were kidnapped in broad daylight. Giving false advertisements in newspapers and TV every day does not improve law and order. Why, after all, are heinous crimes against women increasing in UP?” Read the rough translation of his Hindi tweet.

Party chief Akhilesh Yadav tweeted pictures of a protest and alleged that girls were abducted and then murdered. Gorles’ father, he wrote in the post, alleged that the postmortem was done without consent and in breach of procedure.

“After kidnapping and killing two Dalit sisters in Nighasan police station area, their father has a serious allegation on the police that their post-mortem was done without Panchnama and consent. After farmers in Lakhimpur, now the killing of Dalits is a heinous repetition of Hathras’s daughter About the massacre,” his tweet read.

The incident reminded of the deaths of two cousins in Uttar Pradesh’s Badaun, whose bodies were found hanging from a tree in 2014. Based on his autopsy, police said he was raped and hanged alive.

The deaths had sparked global outrage, which re-ignited a debate in India over the safety of its women.
