People for the Ethical Treatment for Animals (PETA) has always been at the forefront of participating in many animal rights reforms. This time he decided to take another historic step and fight for the rights of flies. Yes, you heard it right. A museum in the German city of Wolfsburg recently had to remove an art installation after PETA complained that the installation had killed flies.

According to reports, fly-killing UV light was used in this art installation. The piece was titled A Hundred Years (1990) and was created by award-winning artist and entrepreneur Damien Hirst. The concept behind A Hundred Years is that flies die when exposed to public light. It consists of a transparent cube. This cube is divided into two regions. On one side, the hatch of the flies and in the other part a UV lamp hanging from the ceiling is visible. Flies are attracted to light. Whenever they go towards it, there is a small hole between the two areas, the flies get burnt to death. According to Damien, this art installation describes a life cycle in a box.

This was criticized by PETA. Following a complaint by PETA, it was removed from the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg Museum. PETA said in its complaint that the artwork was in violation of Germany’s Animal Welfare Act. According to this act killing or harming animals without any just cause is prohibited. It has to be seen whether flies come in this act or not.

The representatives of this museum do not think that flies are covered under the Animal Welfare Act. They used to ask the artist if he could replace real flies with artificial ones. It remains to be seen whether Damien accepts this suggestion.

This isn’t the only time Damien’s artworks have attracted controversy. In one sample, they used a dead cow that attracted flies. According to reports, he used a total of one million dead animals in his art.
