Data from GISAID suggests that the BA.2 sub-lineage of Omicron may be responsible for the increase in most cities. However, in Chennai, the latest increase coincides with a significant increase in the BA.5 sub-lineage. But given the low number of cases indexed in each district, the data has to be taken with a pinch of salt.

The charts show India’s estimated cases (weekly average) by diversity. This estimate is based on weekly genomic surveillance data submitted to GISAID. Only Chennai registered a rise in BA.5 cases, while Mumbai and Bengaluru registered a rise in BA.2 sub-version.
