No other region has recorded such a high daily COVID-19 death rate during the pandemic. By comparison, India had a peak daily death rate of three deaths per million people, Brazil’s peak at 14 per million, while the US peaked at 10 deaths per million. A paucity of reasons behind this sudden jump in deaths.

Vaccination also played a significant role in mortality in the 80+ age group. More than 70% of those who died in the cohort had not been vaccinated.

Hong Kong’s zero COVID strategy had shielded it from the outbreak for two years as the daily cases recorded were less than 1 per million. The graph shows the average cases per million people over time. However, by mid-February 2022, cases began to rise, driven by the Omicron wave, and peaked at 8,700 per million in March.
