At the end of the 24-shot final the teenager was tied with silver winner Ukrainian Oleksiy Lezhebnik on 234.2 points, before winning the shoot-off, where he scored 10.3 against Ukrainian’s 9.7. Su Ming-Jui of Chinese Taipei won the bronze medal.
Abhinav made it to the final in the top eight after finishing second with a score of 575 out of 600 in the 60-shot qualification round. He was tied on points with Kim Kihyon here as well, but the Korean finished on top due to a higher internal 10.
The second Indian in the field, Shubham Vashisht, also made it to the final, finishing sixth with a score of 563. He was eliminated in the final also in the same situation.
It was not all easy for Abhinav in the final as he slowly started finishing fifth after the first five-shot series and moved up to fourth position after 10-shots. However, he displayed great consistency and struggled to piece together some good scores as single shots began and slowly climbed the ladder, eventually catching up with Oleksiy, who took a top-two spot throughout the final. was maintained.
In the last two shots, Abhinav was 0.6 behind Oleksiy. Despite Oleksiy’s faltering, he displayed nerves of steel to maintain the high score, allowing the Indian to clinch the title.
India now has four medals in the 24th Deaflympic Shooting Competition. Dhanush Srikanth won the gold medal in the men’s 10m air rifle while Shaurya Saini won the bronze medal in the same event. Then on Thursday, Vedika Sharma won the bronze medal in the women’s 10m air pistol.
India has sent ten shooters to its 65-strong squad for the Brazil Deaflympics. This is their largest and youngest squad ever and will compete in 11 sports disciplines.
