Death toll in explosion at illegal firecracker factory in Bengal rises to 11

Rabindranath Maity, who suffered 80% burns and was undergoing treatment at the Government SSKM Hospital here, died on the evening of May 19, he said.

“He had third degree burn injuries. After being brought here, his condition continued to deteriorate and he died last evening,” the officer said.

Another injured in the blast, Pinki Maiti, is undergoing treatment at the hospital and her condition is also “very critical”, he said.

The main accused and owner of the illegal firecracker manufacturing unit Kalipada alias Bhanu Bagh, who was arrested by the West Bengal CID on Thursday, succumbed to his injuries at a private nursing home in Odisha’s Cuttack, where he was staying since May. I fled immediately after the explosion. 16.

Nine people had died on Tuesday immediately after the explosion.

The West Bengal Criminal Investigation Department is probing the blast in Egra area and has so far arrested at least nine people, including the main accused and two others from Odisha.

Meanwhile, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Friday issued a notice to the West Bengal government seeking a detailed report on the blast within four weeks.
