Death toll rises to 47 in Uttarakhand due to incessant rains

In Uttarakhand’s Kumaon region, 42 more people were reported dead after several houses collapsed due to torrential rains on Tuesday, taking the death toll in rain-related incidents to 47.

The connectivity with Nainital was restored in the evening after hours of struggle amid inclement weather, officials said.

DIG Nilesh Anand Bharan said, “The casualties have crossed 40 in the Kumaon region alone.”

Twenty-eight people died in Nainital district, six each in Almora and Champawat, and one each in Pithoragarh and Udham Singh Nagar districts, the official said.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami conducted an aerial survey of the rain-affected areas and also interacted with the affected people. Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Mr Dhami over phone and assured him of all possible help.

Interacting with the disaster-affected people in Rudraprayag, Nainital and Udham Singh Nagar districts, Shri Dhami said that people need to be patient in this hour of crisis. The Chief Minister announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh each to the kin of those killed in rain-related incidents.

DIG Bharan said that despite inclement weather and incessant rains, the closed roads in Nainital were cleared. He said that with the restoration of connectivity, the stranded tourists left for their destination via Kaladhungi and Haldwani.

Director General of Police Ashok Kumar, who accompanied the Chief Minister to Kumaon, said that roads, bridges and railway tracks have been damaged in Kathgodam and Lalkuan in Nainital and Rudrapur in Udham Singh Nagar district.

Around 100 stranded people were later rescued after water from the surging Kosi river entered the resort at Lemon Tree Resort on the Ramnagar-Ranikhet road.

An official of the Devasthanam Board said Mr Dhami reiterated his appeal to the pilgrims of Chardham Yatra to stay where they are and not to resume their journey before the weather improves. Tuesday.

The State Emergency Operation Center (SEOC) said that most of the rivers in the state are in spate. The water level of the Ganges in Haridwar has reached 293.90 meters, which is one degree below the danger mark of 294 meters. Kali and Saryu rivers in Pithoragarh have reached the danger mark of 890 meters and 453 meters respectively.

SEOC said the Gori river is flowing close to the danger mark at 606.75 metres.

SEOC said that Nainital received 90 mm, Haldwani 128 mm, Koshyakutoli 86.6 mm, Almora 216.6 mm, Dwarahot 184 mm and Jageshwar 176 mm.
