Decision on CM Soren’s ‘disqualification’ likely to be taken as MLA on Saturday: Sources

Jharkhand Governor Ramesh Bais likely to call on Saturday Election According to sources, the Commission’s view on disqualification of Chief Minister Hemant Soren as an MLA amid the rapidly changing political scenario in the state.

The Election Commission, in a sealed cover, has sent its opinion on a petition to the Governor, seeking that Soren be disqualified as an MLA for “violating election norms” by extending a mining lease. The BJP, which is the petitioner, has sought Soren’s disqualification for violating Section 9(a) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, which deals with disqualification for government contracts.

Meanwhile, Soren has claimed that “satanic forces” were trying to destabilize his democratically elected government and said he would fight “to the last drop of his blood”.

Addressing an event in Latehar, he said he was not worried as he was given the mandate to rule the state by the people and not by his opponents. “Not able to compete with us politically, our adversaries are abusing constitutional institutions. They are using ED, CBI, Lokpal and Income Tax Department to destabilize our government. But we are not worried about it. We have been given this mandate not by the opponents but by the people. I will fight till the last drop of blood in my body.

Claiming that “a gang of outside forces” was active in Jharkhand, he said, “This gang had worked to destroy the state for the last 20 years. When they were ousted from power in 2019, the conspirators could not tolerate it.” If we stay here, they are going to have a tough time ahead.”

“We are not hungry for power. We are here under a constitutional arrangement to work only for the welfare of the people. Did anyone ever think that every old, widow and single woman will get pension? Your son has made this possible with your blessings.”

The ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), as part of the UPA alliance, exuded confidence that Soren would remain the chief minister till 2024 and would move the Supreme Court if Soren is disqualified as an MLA.

The UPA alliance has 49 MLAs in the 81-member assembly. Within the United Progressive Alliance, the JMM as the single largest party has 30 MLAs, Congress 18 MLAs and RJD one. The main opposition BJP has 26 MLAs in the house. Meanwhile, the coalition partners claimed there was no threat to the government.
