Deck being cleared for private universities in Puducherry

The government has started clearing the way for setting up a private university in Puducherry.

In 2019, the then Congress government decided to provide 50 acres to JIPMER from the 303 hectares of land acquired in 2006 to set up a Special Economic Zone in the revenue districts of Sederapet and Karasur.

The Economic Zone project did not gain momentum and the land remained lying idle.

In Thursday’s cabinet meeting, the government decided to take back the land as no work had been done for the hospital in the last two years.

In the meeting, the Chief Minister, according to the source, said that the government is ready to give around 55 acres of land belonging to the now defunct Anglo French Textiles in Pattanur, if JIPMER is willing to take up the multi-specialty hospital project. The land is also close to JIPMER.
