Defence: Israel successfully tests new laser missile defense system – Times of India

Jerusalem: Israelnew laser missile Defense Defense Minister Beni has successfully intercepted mortars, rockets and anti-tank missiles in recent tests Gantzo said Thursday.
Israeli-made laser system, designed to complement a range of air defense systems such as the expensive iron Dome Gantz said, deployed by Israel, will be operational “as soon as possible.”
Gantz said the goal is to deploy the laser system around Israel’s borders over the next decade.
The tests took place last month in the Negev desert.
Prime minister Naftali Bennett It said in February that Israel would start using the system within a year, sending a message to Iran’s arch-enemy.
Gantz said the laser system will be part of “an efficient, affordable and innovative safety umbrella.”
Israel has already developed or deployed a range of systems to intercept everything from long-range missiles to rockets launched from a few kilometers (miles) away.
It has also outfitted its tanks with missile-defense systems.
Little is known about the effectiveness of the laser system, but it is expected to be deployed on land, in the air and at sea.
The announcement came close to the anniversary of the 11-day Israel-Gaza War, in which Gaza’s ruling Hamas terrorist group fired more than 4,000 rockets toward Israel.
Israel said its Iron Dome defense system has been a huge success, with a 90% intercept rate against incoming rocket fire.
But officials say the system is expensive to deploy, and the new laser defense will be much more cost-effective.
The Defense Ministry released a short video showing it successfully intercepted rockets, mortars and an unmanned aerial vehicle. The video, which was heavily edited and included music, showed a laser beam emerging from a ground station, hitting targets and breaking them into small pieces.
Thursday’s announcement comes as talks with world powers stalled on restoring Iran’s broken nuclear deal.
Israel opposes the deal, saying it is not enough to curb Iran’s nuclear program or its military activities throughout the region, and Israeli officials have said they will unilaterally do what is necessary to defend the country. .
