Delhi: Cab, auto drivers on strike from April 18 over rising CNG prices

Hundreds of cab and auto drivers protested against the steep hike in CNG prices and demanded revision of fares at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on Friday.

They threatened that if their demands were not met, they would go on an indefinite strike and would block the entire wheel from April 18.

Ravi Rathore, president of ‘Sarvodaya Drivers Welfare Association’, which claims to have around 4 lakh drivers in Delhi-NCR, said the government should either reduce the prices of CNG or revise the fares.

“We want justice. We have given an ultimatum to the Center and the city government to go on an indefinite strike from April 18,” Rathore was quoted as saying by the news agency. PTI,

He said that the prices of CNG are close to 70 per kg but cabs and auto drivers are still running on old fares. With the skyrocketing prices of CNG, it has become difficult for the drivers to work.

Further, he said revision of fares is pending for the last seven to eight years, though inflation has risen.

“Cab companies come under the state and central governments, so the authorities should pressurize them to increase the fare. Presently we are running cabs at the price limit. from 6.75 8 per km. Looking at the present scenario, the rent should be in the range of 16-18 per kilometer. If the fares cannot be revised, then the rates of CNG should be reduced.

Despite protests, autos and cabs continued to operate on Friday and there was no dearth of such transport on the roads. Ola and Uber cabs and autos were also available back in the day.

CNG price now in National Capital Region (NCT) of Delhi 69.11 per kg, the price has increased 13.1 per kg in a month.
