Delhi government to set up medical college in Dwarka, admission through NEET from 2025

The Delhi government has decided to set up a ‘world-class’ medical college in Dwarka to promote healthcare workers, and its admission process will start from 2025, the city’s health department said on Friday. In addition, a 600-bed maternal and child care hospital with state-of-the-art facilities will be set up in the premises of Indira Gandhi Hospital in Dwarka Sector-9 to ensure better child care.

Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain said that the Arvind Kejriwal government is working relentlessly to provide better health facilities to the citizens and strengthen public health infrastructure. “The number of beds in government hospitals will be increased rapidly during the next few years. We are also working to expand the capacity of various hospitals. The Kejriwal government is committed to its goal and dedicated to serve the people, that is why affordable and quality healthcare is being provided to the people of Delhi,” he said in a statement issued by the health department.

The Delhi government has decided to set up a medical college along with the Indira Gandhi Hospital. The campus will be built in Sector 17, and will help Delhi emerge as a leader in medical education as well as boost the city’s healthcare infrastructure. Director of the hospital Dr BL Choudhary said, “The country needs good doctors and keeping this in mind, it was decided to open a medical school based on modern technology and health services in Dwarka Sector-17. This will benefit the meritorious students and the entire society. Meritorious students who do not pay the fees of private medical colleges will be able to make their dreams come true in the medical field by getting a chance to secure a seat in this government medical college. He said that the youth will not have to go abroad for medical studies.

The department said that the introduction of various courses in medicine and health sciences for the medical college is being considered and the construction of the campus is planned to be completed by 2025. In the initial phase, only MBBS courses will be offered. However, courses for other medical degrees including MD, MS, DM, etc. will also be introduced after some time, adding that special emphasis will be placed on research as well as studies.

In the first session, 125 seats in this college will be admitted by the National Testing Agency through NEET. The admission process will be completely transparent and the faculty will also be of high standards, the statement said. The Health Department said that the Indira Gandhi Hospital in Dwarka is a government hospital in the city with facilities like a private multi-specialty hospital.

Delhi Health Minister Jain said that the health infrastructure of the city has undergone major changes in the last seven years. Not only is the infrastructure developing in the medical sector, but “new doctors are also being prepared and trained, and the number of beds has also increased”, he said. He stressed that the establishment of the new facility would help create Delhi “a new army of doctors”, and the college would also provide employment opportunities to students who dream of becoming doctors but “excessive private medical fees”. Failed to secure admission due to ” college”.

He said that special attention would be given to research as well as studies at Indira Gandhi Hospital so that it emerges as a ‘powerhouse of research and innovation’. A part of the Indira Gandhi Hospital complex built by the Delhi government was kept vacant, and the government has decided to build a maternal and child welfare hospital on it in the future. Here, the babies will be better looked after after delivery, the statement said.

Patients are already getting emergency medical help in the hospital. Presently, the hospital has Departments of Medicine, Pediatrics, Ophthalmology, ENT, Dermatology, Surgery and Physiotherapy along with Gynecologist OPD. Officials said that emergency services were also resumed in the hospital recently.
