Delhi on course to get food truck hub before Christmas as policy nears approval

New Delhi: Dedicated food truck hubs will cater to the needs of Delhiites by the end of the year, as the city government is about to finalize its food truck policy, according to details shared by government officials on Tuesday.

The permits and licenses that are readily available include health trade license (issued by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi), and shop and establishment license (issued by the labor department), the official said.

One of the bottlenecks identified is the permit required from the Delhi Police to operate the business late at night.

“We need police clearance to operate after 11 pm, and we will bring them on board in the further stages. Another hitch is that since only CNG based trucks are allowed in Delhi, cooking food in these vehicles would be a safety issue. So we will ask the RTO (Regional Transport Office) to allow diesel vehicles and we are working on this bottleneck.

The revenue model involves allotting land to concessionaires through a competitive bidding process. Concessionaires will operate and maintain the food truck hubs and onboard individual food truck operators to set up and run their businesses within the respective hubs.

To encourage small businesses, a criterion to onboard a certain percentage of startups will be included in the tender document. As per the details provided, “The minimum license fee along with the profit-sharing model will be decided considering the commercial potential of the respective areas.”
