Delhi to cancel registration of all diesel vehicles older than 10 years on Jan 1

New Delhi: In compliance with the directions of the National Green Tribunal, the Delhi government will deregister all diesel vehicles completing 10 years on January 1, 2022 and issue No Objection Certificate (NOC) so that they can be re-registered at other places.

However, as per an order issued by the Delhi Transport Department earlier this week, no NOC will be issued for diesel vehicles which have completed 15 years or more as on the date of applying for it.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has issued directions related to ban on registration and plying of diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years in Delhi-NCR (National Capital Region).

In an order in July 2016, the tribunal said that their direction for registration of diesel vehicles older than 10 years would be complied with effectively and without any lapse.

The de-registration of 15-year-old diesel vehicles was the first to be done.

Accordingly, the Department will cancel the registration of all such diesel vehicles in Delhi on January 1, 2022, which have completed or will complete 10 years on that date, the order of the Transport Department said.

The department is canceling the registration of those vehicles which have completed their lifetime.

It states that NOC can be issued anywhere in the country for diesel vehicles which are 10 years old and petrol vehicles which are 15 years old.

However, this will be subject to the condition that NOC will not be issued for places which are identified by the states as restricted areas for re-registration, the order said.

The NGT had directed the states to identify areas where air circulation is high and vehicular density is low.

The transport department order said that owners will also have the option of converting their 10-year-old diesel or 15-year-old petrol vehicles to electric vehicles if they wish to continue using them.

They will have to retrofit such vehicles with empaneled electric kits through agencies approved by the department. The manufacturing of panels for the electric kit is under process.

In all other cases, the only recourse would be to scrap vehicles that are more than 10 years old (diesel) and 15 years old (petrol).

Teams of Transport Department and Traffic Police are confiscating such vehicles and sending them for scrapping by authorized vendors.
