Delhi University ready to welcome first year students

Delhi University is all set to welcome the students admitted through the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) as the new semester begins from Wednesday.

Though admissions to 70,000 seats in various DU colleges are still going on, the academic year for the first semester students will begin from Wednesday.

Speaking to PTI, DU Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh said that the university is all set for the start of the new academic year and arrangements have been made to ensure the availability of all facilities for the students.

“We are all set to organize classes for the first year students. This year, we have taken admission through CUET and are applying National education Policy. It is a different policy and students will have more flexibility,” Singh said.

From this academic year, DU is implementing NEP and four-year undergraduate programme.

On Tuesday, the colleges were making last-minute preparations to welcome the students. To ensure the safety of the newcomers, the colleges have conducted fumigation, activated anti-ragging committees and took all other precautions.

Ramjas College Principal Manoj Khanna said that last minute arrangements are being made to welcome the first year students.

There are total 1,550 seats in the college. Khanna said that all the seats have been filled and the admission on additional seats is going on.

“Arrangements have been made. We are all set to host the first batch to come through CUET. We are very excited,” he said.

DU is admitting students this year on the basis of CUET scores instead of class 12 marks. On 12 September, the university released its admission-cum-allocation policy, CSAS. Admission through CSAS is being conducted in three phases – submission of application form, selection of programs and filling of preferences, and seat allotment and admission.

59,100 candidates took admission in the first round of seat allotment. A total of 15,398 candidates have secured their seats in the first round. The second round of seat allotment is going on.

Several meetings were held on Tuesday to ensure smooth conduct of orientation program on Wednesday at Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College.

“Everything is in place. Students will have a pleasant time on campus,” said Principal Gyantosh Kumar Jha.
