Delhi: Water supply affected in many areas as Yamuna almost dried up

The water supply situation in Delhi has worsened due to the low water level of Yamuna. According to the Delhi Jal Board, Yamuna has become dry, so the water level of Wazirabad pond has also dropped to 668.3 feet, which is the lowest this year against the normal 674.5 feet. Delhi Jal Board officials are diverting water from Carrier Lined Canal (CLC) and Delhi Sub Branch (DSB) towards Wazirabad.

Haryana supplies a total of 610 million gallons of water a day Delhi Through two canals – CLC (368 MGD) and DSB (177) – and Yamuna (65 MGD).

Water is supplied to CLC and DSB from Hathini Kund through Munak Canal and Bhakra Beas Management Board. In addition, Delhi receives 253 MGD from Uttar Pradesh through the Upper Ganga Canal, and 90 MGD from wells and tube wells installed across the city.

The water supply from the Wazirabad, Chandrawal and Okhla water treatment plants, which lift raw water from the Wazirabad pond, has reduced by 30 per cent. The capacity of Chandrawal, Wazirabad and Okhla WTPs is 90 MGD, 135 MGD and 20 MGD respectively.

These plants supply drinking water to Northeast Delhi, West Delhi, North Delhi, Central Delhi, South Delhi and New Delhi Municipal Council areas including Delhi Cantonment. Now due to the shortfall in water supply, the Delhi Jal Board said that water will be available at low pressure in parts of North Delhi, North West Delhi, West Delhi and South Delhi till the situation improves.

Delhi requires around 1,200 MGD of water, while DJB supplies around 950 MGD.

Due to low water level in Wazirabad pond, there has been a shortfall of about 65 MGD in water supply.

The DJB on Tuesday had written another letter to the Haryana Irrigation Department, asking it to immediately release 150 cusecs of additional water into the “almost dry” Yamuna.

This is the fourth time in less than three weeks that the application has written to the Haryana Irrigation Department.

On Friday, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar asked the Delhi government not to indulge in “petty politics” over the water-sharing issue, to release its “legitimate share” of its state from Punjab if it needed more water. Should be told.
