Delhi’s air quality index in ‘very poor’ category

According to the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR), the air quality in the national capital remained in the “very poor” category with the overall air quality index (AQI) at 380 on Thursday.

Strong winds and intermittent rain are likely during January 5 to 9, which is expected to significantly improve the AQI in the “low end of very poor” category through strong dispersal and wet accumulation.

“Generally cloudy and light rain” till January 9 and the minimum temperature is expected to reach 13-14 degrees Celsius by Saturday.

Skymet Weather’s vice-president (meteorology and climate change) Mahesh Palawat said the mercury is likely to drop to around 4 degrees Celsius after the western disturbance has removed.

He said that there is also a possibility of moderate rain once or twice in the capital.

According to government agencies, AQI between zero and 50 is ‘good’, 51 and 100 ‘satisfactory’, 101 and 200 ‘moderate’, 201 and 300 ‘poor’, 301 and 400 ‘very poor’, and 401 and 500 ‘severe’.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), cold wave conditions are not likely to persist over North India for the next 6-7 days.
