power demand in delhi The prevailing cold conditions pushed Delhi’s peak power demand to a record high of 5,247 MW on Thursday (January 6), the highest during winter in the last two years, officials said.

According to data from the State Load Despatch Center (SLDC) Delhi, the city’s peak power demand was recorded at 5,247 MW at 10.56 am. He said on Wednesday (January 5) peak demand had crossed the 5,000 MW (5,126 MW) mark this winter.

The peak demand of 5,247 is the highest ever this winter. This is higher than the power demand seen during the winters of 2022 (5,104 MW) and 2021 (5,021 MW), down from 5,343 MW in the winter of 2020, officials said. Power distribution company officials said the increase in power demand was mainly due to increased heating needs of people, which accounts for 50 per cent of the total demand.

A severe cold wave gripped Delhi on Thursday as the minimum temperature dropped to three degrees Celsius – the lowest in January in two years – making it colder than many hill stations. During November and December also the peak power demand of Delhi has been more than the previous years.

Power Consumption Data:

During the last winter, the peak winter power demand in the areas of BRPL and BYPL discoms reached 2,140 MW and 1,122 MW, respectively. This year, it is expected to reach 2,289 MW and 1,159 MW for BRPL and BYPL, respectively, a BSES spokesperson said.

Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL) recorded the highest ever demand of 1,646 MW on Thursday, a company spokesperson said.

“TPDDL today successfully met a record power demand of 1,646 MW without any network disruption and power outages amid cold wave conditions,” he said on Thursday.

The company is hoping to cross the 1,660-MW mark this season and has entered into long-term power tie-ups to meet this and ensure the reliability of its equipment in these low temperatures and foggy conditions, he added. A BSES spokesperson said that the backbone of the company’s power supply system during the winter months consists of long-term agreements with power plants; Including hydro and gas fueled generating stations.

In addition, BSES is getting 840 MW of solar power, 439 MW of wind power, ~25 MW of waste to energy from SECI. He added that 127 MW+ of roof-top solar power installed on rooftops in South, West, East and Central Delhi is also helping.
