New Delhi:

According to the India Meteorological Department, today is another cold day in the national capital on the occasion of Republic Day, but it will not be as cold as the first day.

The night temperature in the city dropped to 5.8 degrees Celsius as cool northwesterly winds were blowing over the northern plains.

The maximum temperature is likely to be around 14 degree Celsius.

The visibility level will be between 1,000 and 1,500 metres.

Delhi on Tuesday witnessed its coldest January day in nine years, with the maximum temperature falling 10 degrees below normal at 12.1 degrees Celsius.

According to the data of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the maximum temperature recorded on January 3, 2013 was 9.8 degrees Celsius.

It was the second consecutive “severe cold day” in the national capital.

The cold was so severe that all the weather stations in Delhi recorded their maximum temperature of 10 degrees to 11 degrees below normal.

According to the IMD, a “cold day” occurs when the minimum temperature is less than 10 °C and the maximum is at least 4.5 °C below normal.

A “severe cold day” is when the maximum temperature is at least 6.5 degrees below normal.

According to IMD data, the national capital has recorded six cold days in January so far, the most in a month in at least a decade.

IMD senior scientist RK Jenamani said Delhi has recorded a maximum temperature of less than 17 degrees Celsius in 11 days this month, which is equal to the number of such days in 2015.

He said that in 2003, eighteen such days were recorded.

The maximum temperature has been below normal since the second week of January. The minimum temperature was near or above normal.

According to Mahesh Palawat, Vice President (Meteorology and Climate Change), Skymet Weather, it prevents prolonged exposure to sunlight mainly due to fog and low clouds.

Delhi has witnessed seven Western Disturbances in January this year, whereas in the month it occurs three to four times as usual.

Palawat said the rain caused by a Western Disturbance increased the humidity in the air, leading to fog for most of the day amid low temperatures.
