Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine to visit India from Monday

Emin Dzhaparova, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine will visit India from 9 to 12 April 2022.

“During the visit, Ms. Dzhaparova will hold talks with Mr. Sanjay Verma, Secretary (West), Ministry of External Affairs, where both sides expected to discuss bilateral relations, current situation in Ukraine and exchange views on global issues of mutual interest. Hopefully,” according to the Ministry of External Affairs.

Minister Dzhaparova will meet Minister of State for External Affairs Meenakshi Lekhi and Deputy National Security Advisor Vikram Misri.

In 2017, the then Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin visited India. The then Minister of State for External Affairs MJ Akbar had visited Ukraine in 2018.

“India shares warm and friendly relations and multifaceted cooperation with Ukraine. In the last 30 years of establishment of diplomatic relations, bilateral cooperation between the two countries has made significant progress in the fields of trade, education, culture and defence. This visit will be an important opportunity to advance mutual understanding and interests,” according to the Ministry of External Affairs.

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the two sides have maintained high-level contacts.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken several times with his counterpart, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, since the hostilities began.

India has provided assistance including humanitarian relief and medical equipment to Kiev since 2022. In September last year, India had given a consignment of 7725 kg of humanitarian aid including essential medicines and medical equipment to Ukraine.

However, India has not condemned the Russian aggression nor has it joined the sanctions regime against Moscow. It has also continued to buy Russian oil, becoming one of the top sources of energy imports for India.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba made a critical statement on the purchase of Russian oil by India in 2022. He called India’s decision “morally unjustified”.
