dgft: Government has ‘good news’ for smartphone makers with Make in India plan – Times of India

Relief news for smartphone makers Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) a. has agreed to remove restrictions on display and camera modules brought through Directorate General of Foreign Trade Notification on 9th February, India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) said.
After a meeting between DGFT, Ministry of Electronics and IT, Ministry of Finance and The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has agreed to lift the ban on display and camera modules.
ICEA President Pankaj Mohindroo said, “Ease of doing business, based on consultation with industry, will help India realize its dream of becoming a global hub for electronics manufacturing and exports – a $300 billion mark by 2026. ”
The government changed the categories of display and camera modules from “restricted” to “free”, after internal consultations and inter-ministerial discussions.
Goods classified as “Free” in the import policy do not require permission from DGFT for import.
However, importing “restricted” goods into the country requires authorization or license from the authority.
ICEA said the move avoids any disruption in the supply chain and further strengthens India’s ambitions to build a strong electronics ecosystem.
