Dharamveer Singh, Deep Grace Ekka nominated for National Awards; EN laud stars

Hockey India India on Wednesday congratulated former India player Dharamvir Singh and Indian women’s hockey player Deep Grace Ekka for being nominated for the National Awards, which will be presented at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on November 30.

Dharamvir Singh, who was part of the Indian men’s team for the London Olympics 2012 and won the gold medal at the Asian Games 2014, will receive the Dhyan Chand Award for Lifetime Achievement.

In his long career, he was part of the team that won silver, bronze in hockey at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. World League finals in Raipur 2015, and bronze medals from the 2010 Asian Games among many other feats.

Veteran Indian women’s team defender Deep Grace Ekka will be honored with the prestigious Arjuna Award. The 28-year-old player from Odisha’s Sundargarh district has contributed to the team’s resurgence in the last decade. She was part of the Indian team’s historic fourth-place finish at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, having won silver and bronze medals at the 2018 and 2014 Asian Games respectively.

She was also part of the team that recently won a bronze medal at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games. His many exploits also include a gold medal at the Asia Cup in 2017. She continues to be an important member of the Indian team currently preparing. For the FIH Nations Cup in Valencia this December.

Congratulating both Dharamveer Singh and Deep Grace Ekka, Hockey India President Dr. Dilip Tirkey said, “It is a proud moment for hockey that two of our legendary hockey players are being recognized for their achievements in the sport. I congratulate Dharamveer Singh on being nominated for the Dhyan Chand Award for Lifetime Achievement and Deep Grace Ekka on winning the Arjuna Award. Both the players have contributed immensely to the performance of Indian hockey at the international stage, I wish them much more success and all the best in their future endeavours.”
