Cooperation in the Indian domestic segment is getting a lot of attention lately. Take, for example, a textured wallpaper and vintage colorway by Bengali designer Sabyasachi for Asian Paints. Or Delhi-based Obeti, known for its luxury rugs, which has a collaborative collection with designers Tarun Tahiliani, Raghavendra Rathore and Shantanu and Nikhil late last year. But the bathroom, now that’s a different ball game. And that’s where designers are taking steps to channel their creativity.

The bathroom is a sanctuary, a retreat, and their spa-like possibilities have been explored extensively during the pandemic. It goes beyond the usual scented candles and potted plants for your consideration on the toilet. With pale walls and antique mirrors, sometimes they resemble sitting rooms with added benefits like a nice long soak. The bathroom collab, therefore, benefits from a designer’s eye, as seen with Vitra. The Swiss furniture company teamed up with British designer Tom Dixon last September to bring out ‘Liquid’, a collection of sanitary ware fittings and furniture. With rounded edges and generous shapes, they can also serve as standalone pieces. Launching in India later this year, Liquid draws inspiration from Victorian churches.

Meanwhile, palatial arches and royal historical monuments in India have been the starting point for a more recent launch. We’re talking about German luxury bathroom manufacturer Sternhagen’s collaboration with jewelry designer Farah Khan last month. The luxury bathroom suite, ‘Sherzaade’, echoes the jewelery aesthetic that Mumbai-based Khan is known for for her A-list clientele. Not surprisingly, the highlight of the Sternhagen x Farah Khan collection is the rectangle tap finished in silver and embellished with 473 natural diamonds weighing 8.62 carats!

“A bathing suit is more than just a place to take a bath. It is where one stops and thinks about the day it begins or the day that has passed,” says Khan. Delicate Gold And with silver dominating the color palette, Sherezaade stands out for its calming tone. Khan, who has worked on quartz and ceramics as a jewelry designer, says it’s easy for her to layer these materials up in a bathroom suite. From the towel holder to the bidet, every accessory carries the motif FK of her jewelery brand, namely Ayat. As far as the faucet, which costs ₹15 lakhs, it definitely makes for an eye-catching bathroom sets the standard. “I wanted to design something iconic and eye-catching for this collection that I would identify with,” explains Khan. “As a jewelery designer, working with diamonds and precious gems is common and A diamond bathroom accessory will definitely be one of its kind that will instantly elevate any bathroom space.”
