Diesel crosses ₹100 in Gandhinagar, fuel prices rise again elsewhere

Diesel prices crossed Rs 100 a liter in Gandhinagar and Leh on Sunday as fuel prices were again hiked in tandem with the firming up of international oil prices.

According to the price notification of the state-owned fuel retailers, the price of petrol was hiked by 30 paise per liter and diesel by 35 paise per liter.

In the notification, the price of petrol in Delhi touched an all-time high of ₹104.14 per liter and ₹110.12 per litre.

In Mumbai, diesel now comes for ₹100.66 per litre; Whereas its price in Delhi is ₹ 92.82.

After Mumbai and Hyderabad, the rates of diesel in Gujarat state capital Gandhinagar and the union territory of Leh have crossed Rs 100 per litre. Diesel now costs ₹100.21 per liter in Gandhinagar and ₹100.06 in Leh.

Bhopal, Raipur and Jaipur are other state capitals where diesel is above that mark.

Continued fuel price hikes have pushed petrol above Rs 100 except for one state capital, with Dehradun, Chandigarh and Guwahati joining that list. Ranchi is the only capital of the state where petrol is below that mark.

Prices vary from state to state depending on the incidence of local taxes.

Barring a minor price change policy, state-owned fuel retailers have started passing on major cost events to consumers from October 6.

Petrol prices have been hiked by 30 paise per liter and diesel by 35 paise for five consecutive days, marking the biggest rally in rates. Earlier, the price of petrol was increased by 25 paise and diesel by 30 paise.

This is because international benchmark Brent crude rose above $82 a barrel after OPEC+ decided not to increase production by more than 0.4 million barrels per day, fueling a sizable increase in rates.

A month ago, Brent was around $72 a barrel.

Being a net importer of oil, India keeps petrol and diesel prices at par with international prices.

The jump in international oil prices ended a three-week hiatus in rates for petrol on September 28 and diesel on September 24.

Since then, the rates of diesel have increased by ₹4.20 paise per liter and that of petrol by ₹2.95.

Before the July/August price cut, petrol price was increased by Rs 11.44 per liter between May 4 and July 17. During this period, the rate of diesel was increased by Rs 9.14.
