Congratulations to the newly elected hockey India (HI) President Dilip Tirkey, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Friday said he was sure that the new president, who himself has a stellar career as a hockey player, will take the game to newer heights.

Orissa Play and Youth Services Secretary R. Vinil Krishna also congratulated Tirkey for being picked at the top position in Indian hockey.

Describing it as a proud moment for Odisha, Krishna said, “Under his leadership, I am sure that new momentum will come in the direction of development of hockey in the country.”

Notably, former India hockey captain and member of the 1998 Asian Games gold medal winning side, Dilip Tirkey, was on Friday elected as the President of Hockey India (HI), after two others, who nominated for the post. filed, withdrawn earlier. Election.

Tirkey became the first hockey player from Odisha to be selected for the top post.

Tirkey made his international debut in 1995 against England and represented India in three Olympics – Atlanta (1996), Sydney (2000) and Athens (2004).

He has won 412 international caps. He has also represented India in several World Cup, Asian Games, Asia Cup and Champions Trophy.

Following his retirement from international hockey in 2010, Tirkey was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha as one of the three Biju Janata Dal (BJD) candidates.

Prior to this, he was serving as the Chairman of Odisha Tourism Development Corporation. He is currently serving as the President of Odisha Hockey Promotion Council which works for the development of hockey at the grassroots level in Odisha.
