Discontent in Assam Congress as youth wing president says will not campaign in Guwahati city elections

With elections to the 60-ward Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) scheduled for April 22, Assam Youth Congress president Angkita Dutta is out of action as she is in Delhi, and told News18 that she is unhappy with the wing’s functioning.

“No, I am not campaigning in the Guwahati Municipal Corporation elections and I have conveyed my decision to the PCC (Pradesh Congress Committee) chief. I am really not happy with the functioning of Youth Congress. I have not been allowed to work properly and I am not sure if it is because I am the woman president of Youth Congress,” Angkita Dutta told News18 from Delhi.

Earlier there was talk of Dutta joining the BJP months before the assembly elections. When asked if something similar would happen, the dynamic youth president of AYCC denied the idea. Dutta, however, said that she is not contemplating doing such a thing as of now.

The eldest daughter of Ajan Dutta, former Congress minister of Assam, Angkita completed her Bachelor of Arts from Daulat Ram College and then did her LLB from the Faculty of Law, University of Delhi. He did his Ph.D. Did it too. in Human Rights from the Indian Institute of Human Rights in 2011. His political career began in 2016 when he contested his first election from Amguri seat in the Assam Assembly elections. She failed to secure her first win, losing against Pradeep Hazarika from Asom Gana Parishad (AGP). Prior to his appointment as the President, he also served as the Vice President of the Assam Pradesh Youth Congress.

After a long nine years, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation elections will have 50% of the wards reserved for women candidates. There will be 780 polling stations where 7,97,807 voters will cast their votes. Of these, 3,97,128 are males, 4,00,654 females and 26 are of third gender. The polling time is from 7.30 am to 4.30 pm on April 22.

The last election to the GMC was held in 2013 in which the Congress won 19 out of the total 31 wards. The BJP candidates won 11 wards, and the AGP won one. The Congress has fielded 55 candidates, where Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party shortlisted 40 contenders who were seeking to expand their base in the Northeast.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will take part in a three-day campaign in the capital city.
