District Collector inspected Kankan Lake

Ms Garg visited the lake with environmental activists on Monday following a report in The Hindu highlighting the current plight of the lake.

District Collector Poorva Garg has sought a report from the Irrigation Wing of the Public Works Department on the status of desilting work of Kankan Lake.

Ms. Garg visited the lake with environmental activists after a report In Hindu Highlighting the present plight of the lake on Monday.

According to members who accompanied him to the lake on Tuesday, the collector expressed his displeasure over the dumping of garbage in the lake two years ago.

He also sought a report from the health department of the PWD regarding the operation of the sewage treatment plant and the mechanism available for monitoring the water quality in the lake.

The Collector agreed to form a group comprising officers of the concerned departments and civil society organizations for proper maintenance of the lake.

Probir Banerjee of Pondicain said, “The cooperation of all the stakeholders will certainly pave the way to make Lake Kanakan a major destination for water conservation, biodiversity and recreation.”
