Djokovic denies ‘misinformation’ about public events in Siberia after COVID-19 test

Novak Djokovic on Wednesday dismissed “misinformation” about his public visit to Serbia after a positive PCR test for Covid-19. The Serb described the allegations as “very hurtful” to his family and said on Instagram that he only found out about the 16 December test results the day after attending a youth tennis event.

Djokovic said he wanted to straighten things out and detailed his whereabouts in the statement.

“I attended a basketball game in Belgrade on 14 December, after which it was reported that several people tested positive with COVID 19. Despite having no COVID symptoms, I took a rapid antigen test on 16 December which came back negative. and took an official and accepted PCR test on the same day, to take our utmost precautions.

“The next day I attended a tennis event in Belgrade to present prizes to the children and took a rapid antigen test before going to the event, and it was negative.

“I was asymptomatic and feeling well and I was not informed of a positive PCR test result until after that incident.

“The next day, 18 December, I was at my tennis center in Belgrade to fulfill a long-standing commitment to L’Equipe interviews and photoshoots. I have canceled all events except the L’Equipe interview,” Djokovic wrote in his statement.

Djokovic said in his statement that he felt “obligated” to go ahead with the interview with L’Equipe because he “did not want to disappoint the journalist”. He said he “made sure I stayed socially distanced and wore a mask except when I was being photographed.”

Despite all the explanations, Djokovic agreed that going ahead with the interview might not have been the best decision.

“When I went home to isolate for the required period after the interview, upon reflection, it was an error of judgment and I acknowledge that I should have rescheduled this commitment.”
