Do not use banned plastic: Collector

District Collector V Vishnu said here on Sunday that avoiding the use of banned plastic would go a long way in protecting the environment.

Speaking at the Gram Sabha meeting held at Konganthan Parai village of Palayamkottai Panchayat Sangh, he appealed to the villagers and civic officials to give assurance on this all-important issue of not using plastic banned by the government.

He said that the people here should practice carrying yellow bags of Manjha Pie while going to buy goods from local shops. Similarly, he appealed to educate the shopkeepers including roadside vendors to use plastic.

The Collector urged the villagers to protect public places like water bodies. Throwing clothes and plastic in the river, washing vehicles should not be allowed. He said that the government can provide infrastructure, but it is to protect the people of the respective places from misuse in any form.

After reading the accounts and other financial statements relating to income and expenditure, he commended the elected representatives for their collective leadership qualities and wished the newly elected representatives good performance.

In Tenkasi, Kanyakumari districts also, gram sabha meetings were held in the respective panchayats, which were attended by collectors and elected representatives, officials said.
