Twitter is often seen divided on some very relevant questions and sometimes some not so ‘suppressing’ issues and while pop culture often depicts issues relating to society, women, sometimes the message, however well May be intended, may not translate well to audiences out there. Recently a scene of a Pakistani TV show has gone viral in which a man is shown slapping a woman during an altercation between husband and wife. The woman does not lie down alternately and slaps him with equal force. The scene caused a lot of Twitter chatter and some liked the depiction of women not taking abuse so easily, some felt that the way the retaliation was shown was not right and violence never tackled the issues. is not the right way.
The scene which has become the talk of the town is a part of episode 12 of the show ‘Laapta’ which aired and aired on HUM TV last week. The man’s character, Daniyal, is portrayed by Mirza Gohar Rashid, a character who is shown to be aggressive and also has unresolved anger issues. He accused his wife Falak, played by actor Sara Khan, of being intimate with her cousin.
When the two are shown in an altercation, Daniyal is shown to slap Falak in the face. She pauses for a second before slapping him back and says, “Don’t you dare! I’ll break your hands”.
Twitter had a mixed reaction to this. And the discussion also included Mirza Gohar Rashid’s tweet where the actor spoke about how ‘harassment is an option’. Elaborating on his stand, the actor said how women need to make choices to fight back in the scene like the character Falak did in the scene.
To prove that harassment is an option if an insecure person with his fragile ego tries his “so-called” muscles on you, make the choice that #pane Done, without fear! A strong slap from a brave woman to such a weak man in our society would be a big leap for women (3/4) – Mirza Gohar (@GoharRsd) September 10, 2021
All women should be like this. If your bf/husband hits you for the wrong reason, hit back. Such men are cowards, and only raise their hands on women because they think they are weak and will not respond, just fight back and this type of man will never mess with a woman again#missing https://t.co/37nxOuUKhB— Malik Arsalan Haider (@malikarsalanha1) September 11, 2021
However some felt that the depiction was flawed and would be highly unlikely in real life. He also pointed out that violence was never the solution to any issue, be it men or women.
I appreciate how he dared Daniyal to slap Falak, but the fact is that this man could have easily beaten him in anger. If physically women were able to fight men, DV’s approach would have been completely different. The sentiment is commendable, msg not so much #missing— Zoha (@Zoha_is_here) September 10, 2021
