He was replying to a tweet that said “it is difficult for a young doctor to do social service when he is struggling to make a living”.
In another tweet, he shared how his mother felt about his low salary. Dr Kumar said, “I was happy with that pension, however, my mother was saddened to see that I get a salary equivalent to that of a peon in a government office (where my father works). She taught me for 12 years Worked hard, followed by MBBS, MD and DJ for 12 years. You can understand a mother’s love and pain!”
He also said that when he was studying no one could see him for a long time. He said, “At the age of 17, traveled alone from Bihar to Vellore (Tamil Nadu) by train in second class (as the parents could not financially accompany their minor son) for an interview. For 5 years No one from home sees me, took admission and left everything on my own for more than 5 years.”
Complaining about his situation, Dr Kumar said in another tweet, “Had only two sets of clothes at any point of time during MBBS. Borrowed old edition books from seniors (could access new edition only in library) ) Didn’t eat out or visit restaurants or movies. Never smoked or drank.”
The post has been viewed 71k times since being shared. Many people said that the medical field is given poor salary.
One user said, “It was really meager. Accident students used to get a stipend of ₹ 8000 (tax-free) per month at that time!”
The third person said, “It is not easy living on a low salary in today’s world considering it is expensive, especially when you have a family to take care of.”
A fourth user wrote, “It’s true. Doctors in India are not getting proper salary. But hospital management complains about health. It never benefits the doctor or the patient.”
