An official source said, “The Department of Telecom (DoT) has asked the telecom sector regulator Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to tighten quality of service norms to curb call drops and improve call quality.” “

The move comes after collecting feedback from public through IVRS (Interactive Voice Response System) calls regarding call drops, call quality etc.

“Quality of service is very important for customer satisfaction and protection of their interests. DoT has requested TRAI to improve the current Quality of Service (QoS) through more stringent standards,” the source said.

The source said that while comprehensively studying the global best practices on QoS, the DoT also observed some key performance indicators. “It has been shared with TRAI today (February 14),” the source said.

TRAI has called a meeting with telcos on February 17 to discuss measures and action plan to improve quality of service, review of norms, benchmarks for 5G services and unsolicited commercial communications.

The move is aimed at improving the quality of telecom service and checking call drops. This also comes at a time when ultra high speed 5G services are being rolled out across the country.

Till now 5G services have been started in more than 300 cities of India. The next generation of technology promises turbocharged speeds (about 10 times faster than 4G) and low-latency connectivity.

Issues related to quality of service have been in the limelight in the last few months. Back in December, the DoT met operators to discuss rising cases of call drops and service quality issues, as it deliberated on policy measures that could be considered to improve call quality .

The call quality was expected to improve with the launch of 5G services, but instead people have complained about deterioration in service quality.

According to an online survey released by LocalCircles in mid-January, 42% of 5G customers surveyed reported no improvement, while 19% reported call connection degradation and call drops after migrating to 5G services. Reported the problem.

Half of the respondents in the survey shared that they face call connection and call drop issues with more than 25% of their calls and 28% of them claimed that more than 50% of their calls have issues.

Telecom operators have been Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel launching 5G services across the country. State-owned BSNL and debt-ridden Vodafone Idea are yet to launch 5G services.
