Dr. Digambar Tukaram Shirke appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of Mumbai University

Dr. Digambar Tukaram Shirke has been appointed as the in-charge Vice Chancellor of Mumbai University. Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari has appointed Shirke as the Chancellor of all state universities. According to a report in a leading news daily, Dr Shirke will continue to hold the position till the permanent VC is appointed. Dr Shirke replaces Dr Suhas Pednekar, who had to step down from his role after attaining the retirement age of 65 years.

With the termination of Dr Pednekar’s services, various other authorities of Mumbai University such as Pro-VC, and Registrar, among others, will step down from their respective posts.

The search for a permanent VC has begun, with Maharashtra Additional Chief Secretary Anand Limaye heading the VC search committee. “The work of the search committee will take two-three months to complete the process and recommend the names. Till then, Dr Shirke will continue to head the MU,” an official in the governor’s office told the national daily.

Earlier, due to the tussle between the state and central governments, the search for the VC of Mumbai University could not start.

Dr. Digambar Shirke took oath as the VC at a ceremony held at the Management Council Hall in the Fort campus. Speaking at the event, he said that the prestigious university has developed a rich historical heritage and tradition of knowledge. He further asked for everyone’s cooperation and efforts at all levels to continue this process. The new VC said his top priority would be to implement the new national education Policy, exam pattern, various authority elections and academic calendar affected by covid-19.

Dr Shirke, who has more than 35 years of experience in academic, research and administrative fields, hails from Vadgaon in Hatkanangale taluka of Kolhapur district. He headed the Department of Statistics at Shivaji University between 2005 and 2015 and then rose to serve as VC.
