Riding fans’ expectations like the back of a giant sandworm, Denis Villeneuve’s hotly anticipated trailer The Dunes: Part Two He was released on Wednesday night. The nearly two-and-a-half-minute sequel offers a stirring glimpse into the world of its characters. That said, it maintains the anticipation rather well while teasing just the tip of the action-packed iceberg (in the desert) and nothing more.
Adapted from the 1965 sci-fi novel by Frank Herbert, The Dunes: Part Two catches up with paul (timothy chalmeT) After the violent elimination of House Atreides in the first film. His father, Duke Leto (Oscar Isaac), is ambushed and murdered in an intergalactic conspiracy. Paul, who now lives with his mother Jessica in the care of the indigenous Fremen on the planet Arrakis, contemplates revenge. He has Chani (Zendaya), who is positively infatuated with the unadulterated pleasures of swimming. He’s also set to ride his first sandworm, with a very important caveat not to try anything too ‘fancy’. Try saying that to Denis Villeneuve.
The trailer shows Paul’s messianic rise on Arrakis with a variety of conflicts and conspiracies in the known universe. This is where we are introduced to new and intriguing characters like Princess Irulan (Florence Pugh) and Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen (Austin Butler), who is in line to inherit Arrakis from her uncle, Baron Harkonnen. His contender is of course Paul. “Thy blade shall chip, and shatter,” Paul told him before the singles combat.
A Visual Wonder of the Dunes: Part Two is a black-and-white portion that appears to be related to Faid-Rautha’s backstory. Meanwhile, Léa Seydoux joins the cast as Lady Margot, an influential member of the secretive Bene Gesserit sisterhood.
At the end of the trailer, we see Paul emerging on top of a hill like a god and killing a mob in a fight.
official summary of The Dunes: Part Two Reads: “This follow-up film will trace the legendary journey of Paul Atreides as he unites with Chaney and Freeman during a war of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. The love of his life and the end of the known universe.” Faced with a choice between fate, he attempts to prevent a terrifying future that only he can see.
The film will be released in theaters on November 3, 2023.
