Mexico international Erik Gutierrez equalized in the 48th minute with a diving header, unmarked stealth at the back post to go from a free-kick to the end of the flick-on.

Cody Gakpo claimed the winner two minutes later with a strong run from deep and a powerful shot that caught Ajax’s veteran goalkeeper Maarten Steckelenberg, who was preferred in the lineup for the late Andre Onana.

Ajax went ahead in the 23rd minute when teenager Ryan Gravenberch scored, played a quick one-two and then PSV goalkeeper Yvonne Movogo’s shot was swung wide.

PSV, who are four points behind Ajax in the Dutch league standings with five rounds completed, were also denied an early attempt by VAR, with two tough offside decisions from Ajax against them.

It was PSV’s first cup success in 10 years, denying Ajax a third consecutive Dutch Cup final victory under coach Erik ten Haag, who are the leading candidates to join Manchester United the following season.
